July 14, 1981 - May 18, 2021
Justin Hensley, 39, of Lafayette, Indiana, was sang home May 18, 2021. He heroically died while saving his mother from yet another disastrous fall down the stairs. Actually, he may not have. You may never know. But he always appreciated humor and absolutely knew that people only read obituaries to find out exactly what it was that ended the life of the deceased. (Though you shouldn’t, and we would advise you against it, you can quit reading now: as we will never tell the details of the demise. It is better for you if we avoid the details. You welcome. But suffice it to say, he fought and fought to stay with all of us.) Justin was born July 14, 1981. He was a father, son, brother, and best friend (if you were his friend, you were definitely his best friend). Justin was born a force to be reckoned with; he was the guy that you wanted and, even if you didn’t realize, needed in your corner. His charisma was undeniable, and if you did not get to experience being around him and his passion for life, you truly missed out (and it makes us deeply sorry for your loss). Justin was an incredible craftsman. He had an innate ability to design, create, and improve. He was compassionate, fearless, and certainly, one hell of a good time. If you were lucky enough to have known him, you know that he had an endless capacity for generosity, honesty, and a deep appreciation of life. He greatly impacted the lives of others, and we are sorry if he did not yet have the chance to mark his mark on your life. (He certainly would have--that was unavoidable if you were in his realm.) Justin loved music and nature deeply. He loved to fish and was an active participant in the Kindness project; painting, hiding and finding rocks around the community. He amassed spectacular collections. But above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Justin is survived by his daughter Reed Hensley; his girlfriend Marie VanLue, and her three boys Philip, Junior and Seth; his mother Bridget O’Brien (nee FitzSimons); his brothers Joshua Hensley and Leif O’Brien; and his sisters Jess Malher (nee Hensley), Jamie Pauley (nee Hensley), and Keavy West (nee O’Brien). Justin sang a little while and then he flew on. He will be greatly, deeply missed. A private service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to made to Brain and Behavior Research Foundation in Justin’s honor.
